( LJ stats meme )
No surprise I'm at the top, I think just about everyone comments most on their own journal responding to comments left by others.
In unrelated news, I finished Robin Hobb's Forest Mage today. Very good but quite depressing. Deeply distressed to learn that the paperback version of the final installment doesn't come out until November (the hardcover came out this past November). We'll see if I cave. For now I've got plenty of other stuff to read. |

I've noticed that I don't really have "gaming time" anymore. I just have "Call of Duty" time.
EDIT: Meme time! Stolen from eefster. The rules: Go to the Wikipedia home page and click random article. That is your band's name. Click random article again; that is your album name. Click random article 15 more times; those are the tracks on your album.

mood: relaxed music: Kaiser Chiefs - Boxing Champ

I've decided to shelve Otherland where I am for now, as I'm finding it becoming dense here, early in Book Three -- I will finish it, but I don't seem to be making any progress, so I think it's best to pause there for now and read a few other things. Here's what I've still got unread:
- Bujold - Cordelia's Honor (Miles Vorkosigan series, book #?)
- Cook - The Tyranny of the Night (The Instrumentalities of the Night, Book One)
- Dick - The Philip K. Dick Reader (short story compilation)
- Donaldson - The Illearth War (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, Book Two)
- Mieville - Perdido Street Station
- Mieville - Iron Council
- Paterson - Bridge To Terabithia
- Peake - The Gormenghast novels (Titus Groan, Gormenghast, Titus Alone)
- Pressfield - Gates of Fire (on loan from
osravan) I've started the following but may never finish them, for the reasons detailed below:
- Abercrombie - The Blade Itself. Don't know what to say about this one. It's just not grabbing me. I'll give it another chance sometime, probably.
- Erikson - The Malazan Book of the Fallen series, of which I have copies of the first two books. Of all of these, I'm most likely to try this one again because it seems like it could be so cool. But Gardens of the Moon is really a slog.
- Gaiman - American Gods. I don't get the love here. Everything in it has been done before and better. And I like Gaiman.
- McCarthy - The Road. I don't care how good it is if it makes me want to slit my wrists inside thirty pages.
- Pullman - His Dark Materials trilogy. I read
The Amber Spyglass The Golden Compass, and was so incredibly underwhelmed I don't think I could bring myself to finish the trilogy. It was just so bland and simplistic. A huge disappointment after all I'd heard. I think I'll probably skip the film as well. If anyone wants to chime in with what I should read next, now's a good time. I think I want to try to commit to reading a book a week. |

I posted this at Ranland too, but for those who aren't regulars there, I'm posting it here too.
Anyway, it's that time again! Child's Play, the Penny Arcade charity, is open for business. For those not in the know, Child's Play aims to get fun stuff like games and whatnot to sick kids in hospitals during the holiday season. If this sounds like something you'd like to support, hop right in.

If you've got some spare cash this holiday season, why not brighten up a sick kid's day? |

So uh my brother just got engaged.
Mazel tov, right? Except that he's engaged to a Chinese (read: not Jewish) girl, so my parents are furious.
I really hope they don't alienate my brother over this. Much as I punched him when I was little, I like the little bastard. |

I've decided my nights aren't relaxing enough. So from now on, I am going to go to bed earlier, take a hot shower and have a mug of hot tea every night. I may change the tea to something else when it gets warmer again, but for the cooler part of the year, hot tea sounds nice. |

I broke out the heating pad tonight for a sore back.
In unrelated news, I am amazing, for successfully deploying an absolutely ancient laser printer -- like, so ancient it doesn't support DHCP -- on my home network. What? It was free. |

After polling through LJ, the boards, AIM and in person, I've settled on Huxley's Brave New World. I'm about 30 pages in and it's rather good, if monstrous, so far. Thanks for the input, everyone.
Most of the movies from the movie meme were guessed. The two that weren't:
4. "I have four sisters. And I'd trade them all in for a good dog." Bridge To Terabithia
9. "You just don't have the requisite Celtic soul, man." Intermission |

Okay! Time to figure out what I'm reading next. Here's the list I've narrowed it down to.
- Cook - The Tyranny of the Night
- Pressfield - The Gates of Fire
- Mieville - Perdido Street Station
- Pullman - The Golden Compass
- Rowling - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
- Huxley - Brave New World
I have other books to read too, but I'd like to read one of these next. What should it be? I haven't read any of these. |

It's 4:30 in the morning. I got three and a half hours of sleep last night, and took a three hour nap this afternoon. Rather than sleep, I elected to stay up until now and finish Young Miles. It was worth it. That was really fantastic. |
